My Story
I almost said yes… to another unpaid speaking opportunity.
January 2024. A government-funded organisation emailed me inviting me to speak. No budget mentioned. In the past, I would’ve accepted. Free talk. Great feedback. No follow-up.
I was tipped over the edge. I decided to do something different. I asked for advice in coaching group, on how do I ask to be paid.
That changed Everything!
Because I realised, I had to unlearn a behaviour of waiting for permission and to start asking to be paid as the norm.
But this time, I asked:
“What’s your budget for this work?”
This deal went from £0 to a four figure deal.
That one sentence changed everything.
Now I:

Deliver paid workshops and training
Help others close their Paid Speaker Visibility Gap
That experienced changed my behaviour and my bank balance. So I coined this phrase, “You teach people how to treat you as a paid speaker.”
I see this even with professional speakers, the wrong behaviours, the thinking I don’t want to lose the deal and reverting to behaviours that don’t serve negotiating an effective speaker booking.
